AVAILABLE DOGS:

"Lucy" and "Blurr" - Graceville, QLD - Dogue de Bordeaux cross Mastiff x

Picture
** Assisted rehoming, we are relying on the description provided by their owner.

Lucy (no mask) and Blurr (black mask) are sisters and have grown up together. They are bonded, but can be separated. We actually think separating them may be a good idea. They are both 3 years old, DOB 25/11/2018. Father was a pure bred Dogue de Bordeaux, mother was an English Mastiff cross.

Temperament: Very loyal and affectionate at home with us. Great guard dogs, but friendly once we have let someone in the gate. They play VERY rambunctiously with each other, and much more gently with our old Golden Retriever.

They are only somewhat socialized with other dogs, and can be reactive.
They are fine with our parent’s Border Terrier, and sister’s Golden Retriever & old Jack Russell. They also LOVE playing with a friend's Great Dane / Poodle (but haven’t seen her much in the last year or so). It is quite vigorous playing, but hasn’t ever gone over the top into a fight.

Lucy tends to be aggressive towards other dogs (that she doesn’t know) and so Blurr follows her sister’s lead. We have tended to err on the side of caution and generally won’t trust them with other dogs they don’t know or will closely manage the introduction. Blurr has a gentler nature than Lucy, and seems to want to play with other dogs (but rarely gets the chance).

They are smaller and finer in build than a pure Bordeaux, but are still large formidable looking dogs. Having two dogues running enthusiastically towards an unfamiliar dog or owner tends to prompt a fear response in either the dog or owner. If they are shown aggression by another dog they are quite happy to react and respond in kind. Hence their socialisation off lead with other dogs is quite limited.

No fears, great in car (very used to long distances, i.e. 3-4 hours). They can be reactive to strangers, but friendly once we let them in the gate / house.

Their prey drive is quite strong. They respond strongly to birds (esp bush turkeys), lizards, and small things that run. They are not suited to go to a home with other small animals or with livestock (no farm life for them).

Obedience training: They live inside, but are trained to stay on the bottom floor of our two storey house. They generally prefer being around the humans, inside or out.

They have been crated since pups. Both sit on command, and wait on command (e.g. when feeding, or walking through doors).

Lead work is greatly improved with loose lead walking now normal.  Individually, they each work well on the lead 1:1 (ie, 1 human, 1 dog) with little redirection. Progressively less well as a second and third dog are added. This is a work in progress with them defaulting to walking out in-front of the human rather than beside.  (We define “working well” as walking to heel without sudden pulling or undesirable direction changes. And when commanded, desisting from distraction / refocussing on the human).
When off lead and called, they are generally appropriately responsive and come, (although if prey drive is engaged can be harder to get their attention and response).

They are generally obedient and responsive.

Being siblings there is a bit of competitiveness: if one gets something they both want it (e.g. attention, dinner), though not to the point of aggression. They eat next to each other without issue. They also tend to sleep together (by choice), in the same crate / on the same mat.

They respond quite well to training.  Lucy responds especially well to training. Blurr is still good, but a little more easily distracted.

They are walked about five times a week. Often at night to a local dog run for a run off lead if other dogs aren’t there. We would prefer they were walked/trained daily, but life hasn’t been very accommodating in enabling this (floods, COVID etc)

Health: Both are desexed. Last vaccinated 7/4/2022. Wormed. They weigh about 40kgs each. No known health issues.

"Dayna" - Albany Creek, Brisbane, QLD

Picture
Purebred female, 3yrs old (DOB:08/02/2019).

Dayna is a private rehome. Her owner has written up the following to describe her temperament:

Hi my name is Dayna quite often I am referred to as Dae Dae.  I was adopted from a Breeder at seven-month-old where I lived with my sisters, my mom aunties and uncles who are all above 80 kg. I then came into a home, but I was raised by a beagle who taught me that you can do anything for Food. I am now 3.5 yo. I quite often lay around wanting belly rubs and give some serious side eye glances if you ever stop rubbing my belly. Most of my time is spent on my back with my legs in Air begging my human to rub my belly.  I will do absolutely anything for love.

In the mornings I have some fluoxetine in peanut butter because I really struggle to control how much I love my hoomans.  When I go out, I walk in a halti and in a harness, after dark and away from any other dogs that may potentially want to look at my mom and dad because I love them so much I just don’t really like to share them. I'm pretty good in the car. I want to be the sole focus of my humans attention and therefore I just feel like I would really like to live in a house by myself. My mom worked from home for the last year, and I will often just lay at the door where she is working and follow her around the house when she has a lunch.  I do quite enjoy my dog walks sometimes as I have a little bit of a sore hip, but the active walking has really helped me keep healthy.  I have had my eyes done to try and help me be the best dog that I can be, but I personally feel that it is time for me to be in a house by myself. My mom and dad have tried really hard for 2 1/2 years now I just really need to be by myself so that I can have all the love in the world. My mom and dad will miss me and I would really like to stay in contact and visit where possible. I am fully vaccinated and I coped well when having house sitters rub my belly while mom and dad are away. I love anyone that wants to cuddle me but I definitely would not let any strangers in your house if they mean harm. After all I’m just doing what a mastiff is supposed to do. Everybody who meets me says but I am actually a lot bigger than I ever have looked on social media I weigh approximately 60 kg. I don’t mind going out to water holes on the beach as long as there are no other dogs that will steal my parents attention. I haven’t lived with any of kids but I probably might compete with them or jump on them when I’m excited so I don't think they're a good fit.

My basic obedience is ok but I am most skilled at flicking an ear to let my parents know I heard them but am choosing to ignore them.

NOTE: Dayna needs to be an only dog, and needs an owner who is experienced with large breeds that can manage a dog that can potentially be dog aggressive. If you have existing pets or young kids, Dayna probably isn't a perfect fit for your home.
